Meet Oliver 👋. Olli was leading a team of 5 as the head of IT for a medium-sized company in Hamburg. Recently, he decided to go his own way, and took our Data Science course in order to overcome some of the limits he found in his previous role. We spoke to him about what he’s planning to do now he’s graduated, and his experiences at Spiced.
Hi Olli! Thanks for talking to us 🙂 Tell us a little about your educational and professional background?
I worked for a medium-sized company for 15 years, starting as an assistant to the technical management. At the SAP implementation, I supported all departments and thus acquired extensive knowledge of all processes. Then I completed a lot of trainings in the SAP environment with a focus on ABAP development and SAP consulting. My strengths here are the automation and optimization of SAP processes and the development of company-specific requirements. Due to my good knowledge in machine programming, I was the contact person for the connection of production machines to the leading ERP system. For the last 9 years I was the head of IT and led a team of 5 employees.
Ich habe 15 Jahre für ein mittelständisches Unternehmen gearbeitet und dort als Assistent der Technischen Leitung begonnen. Im Zuge der SAP-Einführung habe ich alle Fachbereiche unterstützt und mir so ein umfangreiches Wissen über alle Prozesse angeeignet. Danach absolvierte ich zahlreiche Weiterbildungsmaßnahmen im SAP-Umfeld mit dem Fokus auf ABAP Entwicklung und modulübergreifende SAP-Beratung. Meine Stärken sind hier die Automatisierung und Optimierung von SAP-Prozessen und die Entwicklung von unternehmensspezifischen Anforderungen. Aufgrund meiner guten Kenntnisse im Bereich der Anlagenprogrammierung war ich der Ansprechpartner für die Anbindung von Produktionsmaschinen an das führende ERP-System. Die letzten 9 Jahre war ich dann IT-Abteilungsleiter und habe ein Team von 5 Mitarbeitern geführt.
You took the course in Hamburg, tell us a little about the region, and how exciting it is for professionals?
I was born and raised in the north. Now I live with my family only 15 minutes from the Baltic Sea and less than an hour from Hamburg. So it made sense to choose Hamburg.
Hamburg is of course an exciting metropolis with many great professional opportunities.
Ich bin im Norden geboren und aufgewachsen. Jetzt wohne ich mit meiner Familie sogar nur 15 Minuten von der Ostsee und eine knappe Stunde von Hamburg entfernt. Damit war es naheliegend, Hamburg zu wählen. Darüber hinaus ist Hamburg natürlich eine spannende Metropole mit vielen tollen beruflichen Möglichkeiten.
Take us back to that day you decided you wanted to study Data Science – what was driving you?
In my previous work as a developer, I repeatedly came up against limits that can often only be resolved with a high investment by the company itself. Or there was simply no way to solve certain problems. I wanted to do something about that. With Python in the field of data science, I can achieve a lot more and overcome these limits. So that I can go my own way, I have decided to leave the company.
Ich bin in meiner früheren Tätigkeit als Entwickler immer wieder an Grenzen gestoßen, die oft nur durch einen hohen Invest des Unternehmens selbst gelöst werden können. Oder es gab einfach keine Möglichkeit bestimmte Probleme zu lösen. Dagegen wollte ich etwas tun. Mit Python im Bereich Data Science kann ich viel mehr erreichen und diese Grenzen überwinden. Damit ich den Weg gehen kann, habe ich mich entschieden das Unternehmen zu verlassen.
Why did you choose to study at Spiced? What made the course stand out?
I just entered Data Science – Studium – Hamburg in the Google search and the Spiced Academy was one of the providers. Ultimately, it was the way the course content was conveyed and described over the 12 weeks. I had my first contact with Anna from Spiced in the summer of last year and after that I knew if I would do it, it would be here. Everything is very professional and yet somehow familiar.
Ich habe einfach Data Science – Studium – Hamburg in die Google Suche eingegeben und die Spiced Academy war ein Anbieter davon. Letztendlich war es die Art der Vermittlung und Beschreibung der Kursinhalte über die 12 Wochen. Im Sommer letzten Jahres hatte ich den ersten Kontakt mit Anna von Spiced und danach wusste ich, wenn ich es mache, dann hier. Alles sehr professional und doch irgendwie familiär.
What are you planning to do with the new skills you’ve picked up from our Data Science Bootcamp in Hamburg?
Of course, polish up my Linkedin profile and brag something to family and friends.
I don’t know yet if I just want to work as a data scientist. My background is on SAP and I feel more at home there. The newly learned skills in data science help me with analytics. I am now focusing more on that. I now finally have the opportunity not only to model with existing data, but can also access other data sources much faster and easier or create them myself.

Ich weiß noch nicht, ob ich nur als Data Scientist arbeiten möchte. Mein Background ist dafür zu SAP lastig und da fühle ich mich auch eher aufgehoben. Die neu erlernten Fähigkeiten im Bereich Data Science helfen mir natürlich ungemein im Bereich Analytics. Da setze ich auch nun mehr meinen Schwerpunkt. Ich habe jetzt endlich die Möglichkeit nicht nur mit vorhanden Daten zu modellieren, sondern kann viel schneller und einfacher auf weitere Datenquellen zugreifen oder diese selbst zu erstellen.
What was the most challenging aspect of the course?
Speaking in English all day again was the biggest challenge for me. Reading and writing wasn’t the problem, it was part of everyday life at work. But since I was more concerned with German customers, I didn’t feel so safe about small talk in English. The course also helped me here and in the end I felt much safer.
Sometimes I found the theoretical part a little difficult, but then when I could do it through the practical exercises, it became clearer.
Wieder den ganzen Tag in Englisch zu sprechen, war für mich die größte Herausforderung. Lesen und schreiben war nicht das Problem, dass war ja Alltag im Job. Da ich aber eher nur mit deutschen Kunden zu tun hatte, fühlte ich mich mit Smalltalk in Englisch nicht mehr so sicher. Aber der Kurs hat mir hier zusätzlich geholfen und ich fühlte mich am Ende viel sicherer.
Manchmal fand ich den theoretischen Teil etwas schwierig, aber wenn ich es dann anhand von den praktischen Übungen umsetzen konnte, wurde es klarer.
What was your favourite aspect of the course?
I can’t say that exactly. Every week there was always a highlight that I thought was cool. Like, “Is that really possible? And I just implemented that?”
I enjoyed working on my final project. You have your own idea and a rough idea of the result. When you have written the first lines of code yourself and have some first part successes, that makes you incredibly proud.
Das kann ich gar nicht so genau sagen. Jede Woche hatte immer ein Highlight gehabt, bei dem ich dachte, das ist ja cool. Das geht wirklich? Und ich habe das gerade umgesetzt?
Die Arbeit an meinem finalen Projekt hat mir am meisten Spaß gemacht. Man hat eine eigene Idee und eine ungefähre Vorstellung von dem Ergebnis. Wenn man dann die ersten Zeilen Code selbst geschrieben hat und erste Teilerfolge hat, das macht schon unheimlich stolz.
Do you have any insights for anyone thinking to take a break from their job to study Data Science?
Do it! If you are interested in data science or just want to find out more about it, you shouldn’t think so long. I quit my job for it and haven’t regretted it to this day. There are so many new opportunities now, and besides, data scientist sounds damn great.
Regarding the impressions, I can only say that sleep is overrated. During this time, you spend a lot of time studying the subject matter and working on the weekly project takes a lot of time. But it’s worth it.
Machen! Wer Interesse an Data Science hat oder einfach mehr darüber erfahren möchte, sollte nicht so lange überlegen. Ich habe meinen Job dafür gekündigt und es bis heute nicht bereut. Es ergeben sich jetzt so viele neue Möglichkeiten und außerdem klingt Data Scientist schon verdammt großartig.
Zu den Eindrücken kann ich nur sagen, Schlaf wird überbewertet. Man beschäftigt sich in der Zeit sehr ausführlich mit dem Lehrstoff und die Arbeit an dem wöchentlichen Projekt nimmt viel Zeit in Anspruch. Aber es lohnt sich.
Tell us about working with Ugur and Sara?
I’ve been through some training courses in my life: The teachers at the Spiced Academy have surprised me very positively. All of them have their specialty, but were always able to help on any topic. Regarding Ugur and Sara, their team work was great.
Ugur has the ability to explain difficult topics simply, even if she is an astrophysicist or maybe because of that, you need a lot of imagination.
From now on I associate penguins with Sara. (you can only understand if you have done the course). I like her happy open nature and her willingness to help (but she has a terrible handwriting).
Ich habe in meinem Leben schon einige Weiterbildungen mitgemacht: Die Lehrer der Spiced Academy haben mich schon sehr positiv überrascht. Alle haben ihr Spezialgebiet, konnten aber immer zu jedem Thema helfen. Zu Ugur und Sara…
Die Zusammenarbeit mit Ugur und Sara war super.
Ugur hat die Fähigkeit schwierige Themen einfach zu erklären, auch wenn sie Astrophysikerin ist oder vielleicht deshalb, da braucht man ja auch viel Fantasie.
Mit Sara verbinde ich ab jetzt Pinguine. (kann man nur verstehen, wenn man den Kurs gemacht hat). Ich mag ihre fröhliche offene Art und ihre Hilfsbereitschaft (sie hat aber eine schreckliche Handschrift).
You had to study during the lockdown – how was that? Any tips for getting through?
For me it was perfect! So I still had more time for my family than I thought before. Of course, I would have loved to experience the campus and maybe my fellow students in real life. But I’ve always been used to working from home, so it was rather helpful for me.
Für mich war es perfekt! So hatte ich doch noch mehr Zeit für meine Familie als vorher gedacht. Den Campus hätte ich natürlich auch gerne mal erlebt und vielleicht mal meine Mitstudenten im richtigen Leben. Ich war es aber schon immer gewohnt von zu Hause zu arbeiten, deshalb war es für mich eher hilfreich.
Do you have any words of advice for our upcoming graduates about the Data Science course or the Bootcamp experience more generally?
Use the community and the teachers. Think early on which final project you want to implement.
Nutzt die Gemeinschaft und die Lehrer. Macht euch schon frühzeitig Gedanken, welches finales Projekt ihr umsetzen wollt.
How was Spiced, what would you recommend about it?
It’s a family community that is growing steadily and now I’m a part of it.
Es ist eine familiäre Gemeinschaft, die stetig wächst und jetzt bin ich ein Teil davon.
