Loris graduated from SPICED in July, and now works for FreightHub as a Full Stack Web Developer here in Berlin. Here we find out about his journey!
What were you doing before SPICED?
Before moving to Berlin I was in Italy, working for a small company programming CNC machines. After a long time working in that industry, I felt it was time for a change.
What made you want to take the plunge and learn to code?
I’d tried coding before and I always liked it. I started learning code at school, and since I was Electronics Head Technician at my previous job, I needed to know how programming worked anyway, regardless of whether I liked it or not. Turns out I did like it!
I finally made up my mind to learn to code since I think it’s going to be important for the future of many jobs out there.
Did you have any fears coming into the bootcamp?
Before I joined SPICED I was worried I wouldn’t be good enough. I was scared of my own dreams, and of failing them. I saw coders as kind of superhuman. But you’ve only got one life, you know? There’s no point spending that life crouched in the corner afraid. So I took the plunge and decided to learn to code. If you want your life to be different, sometimes you have to make a leap.
Did you have a favourite project?
I loved doing my final project. I was allowed to build whatever I wanted using whatever technologies I liked. Basically I painted my ideas onto the screen… It was awesome! Now I’ve finished the course, I see myself as a person that uses his brains instead of his hands to solve real problems. From doing the course, I learnt than I can grow a lot and with hard work I can become the person I want to be.
What are you up to now you’ve finished at SPICED?
I landed a web developer job about 6 weeks after graduation here in Berlin and it’s been great.
What advice would you have for future students?
If I were to give any piece of advice to people, I would say that you learn more from failure than from regret. I would also warn you: there’s no magic in it, meaning that you need to stay fully focused on your programming tasks during the entire period.
